Johnny Come Lately

John McCain came out against torture yesterday. Now there's a stretch.

New Iraq Abuse Allegations Get McCain Moving

"We've got to have it stopped. It is hurting America's image abroad,"

I've got news, Senator: too little from you, too fucking late. Where were you, the unimpeachable voice, about a year and a half ago when we were waiting for you to step up to the plate? Where you been? Standing next to George Bush, lending implied support (shown here at the very hour that Katrina bore down on Louisiana).

"McCain noted that he wanted prohibitions against torture underscored in the Army Field Manual, which he said "is the document that the Army goes by and the military goes by when in the process of interrogation and treatment of prisoners."

So...let me get this straight: you want to have the torture part underlined in the manual? Yep. That should fix it.

"McCain, himself a victim of torture while a prisoner during the Vietnam War, made it clear Sunday that he did not believe that the military, including Pentagon leaders, had gotten the message that the United States must obey the Geneva Convention and abstain from torture."

No, assbite -- they got the memo, from their Commander in Chief, your buddy, actually encouraging it.

"We've got to make it clear to the world that America doesn't do it. It's not about prisoners. It's about us."

Oooh, wrong again. America does, and it is, in fact, about the prisoners. It can be about our precious image later; right now our country is torturing people, and so -- with respect -- it ain't about you. Torture is either right, or it's wrong. Humans have rights, decency, and dignity, or they don't. Countries do not get supremacy. You have failed. Go home.

You should have been President, Mr. McCain, but you should also have stood up earlier. When I see you go to Guantanamo, or Abu Ghraib, and return to tell the Senate with a straight face, "Gentlemen, I have lived in a cage, and these are nice cages", I'll listen.

And how you feelin' on John Roberts? Awkward position, isn't it?

Schmuck.
